Japanese breakfast have some side dishes, for example broiled or grilled fish, rolled omelet, soft-boiled egg, tsukemono pickles, dried seaweed, natto, and so on, but today, some people eat other foods such as bread with coffee, serial and so on.

Japanese Curry

I’d like to tell about Japanese curry. Curries are very popular dishes in Japan. Japanese-style curries are usually thicker than curries found in other cuisines. Using Japanese curry roux such as House, S&B and Glico, makes it easy to cook Japanese-style curry at home. Curry mixes thicken curry sauce and vary from hot to mild. They contain many kinds of spices and vegetables and fruit essences.
Typical Japanese curries contain vegetables, such as onion, carrots, and potatoes, and meat. Chicken, pork, beef, or seafood can be used for curries. Also, ingredients can be vegetable only if you prefer. Many people cook a large amount of curry at a time and keep it for a few days. It is said that it tastes more delicious when people eat curry after made several days. For Japanese, Thai curry is not similar because they contain coconut milk. If you came to Japan and ate Japanese curry, you might be surprised.

How to make curry is very easy so in Japan we make curry at festival which is held by region and class of home economics in elementary school.

My mother put a few types of curry roux because it makes curry more delicious. Sometimes my mother put sea food or meat.
Also, curry bread ( called karē pan in Japan), also called curry doughnut, is a popular Japanese food. An amount of Japanese curry is wrapped in a piece of dough, and the dough breaded in panko, and deep fried. A lot of bakeries sell curry bread. Also, some curry shops in Japan sell curry bread.

“Kinnkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion)” is the Japanese temple in Nara. It looks like very gorgeous and it was made in 1397 by Yoshimitsu Ashikaga. The real name is “Rokuonnji”. The temple has the phoenix on top of the roof. We can see the two beautiful views, because the temple is projected on the lake. It attracts us so much. When I was a elementary student, I went there. I was impressed and it was very beautiful. You should go there someday.

Famous food I like

Hello! I live in Aichi prefecture. Nagoya city in Aichi is big, so there are many famous foods in Nagoya. They are very delicious, but especially, I recommend Tenmusu to you. Tenmusu is an original rice ball that contains shrimp fritter (tempura). Ten means fritter, and Musu means rice ball. Rice ball is called “Omusubi” in Japan. I wish you want to eat Tenmusu by reading this article.

Tenmusu is a little similar to rice ball. It is easy for you to make it. Tenmusu is invented in Mie prefecture, where is located to next to Aichi prefecture. “Senjyu” which is a restaurant in Mie invented as a boarding meal. Now, this restaurant is a specialty restaurant of Tenmusu. A birthplace is in Mie, but now Tenmusu becomes to be a famous food in Aichi.

A shrimp fritter, rice, laver and little salt are essential ingredients of Tenmusu. About a shrimp, mostly, Southern rough shrimp is used to make it. It lives in Ishikari Bay in Hokkaido. Its length is about 12 centimeters and the best season is summer. It is easy to eat because it is a bite-size. If it becomes cold, it does not fail the taste and is delicious. Also, it is sold as Tenmusu box lunch.

My grandparents lived in Nagoya city, so I often went there to visit them. When we visit my grandparents’ house, they gave me Tenmusu on my way home because it is for them to go to buy it. Also, my mother likes it very much, so she often bought it. Thus, since I was young, I often can eat it, so I like it very much. When you have a chance to visit Nagoya city, please eat Tenmusu!

Ise Udon

In this article, I would like to introduce about Ise Udon, which is types of Japanese thick white noodles. This is a specialty food of my hometown, Mie prefecture. You can eat it in Ise famous for Ise shrine and also in a lot of cities in Mie prefecture. I wish you would try Ise Udon when you came to Mie, Japan by reading this article. Now, I want to tell more clearly.
Generally, Ordinary Udon is about 1 cm in diameter and it has strong “koshi” means chewy. On the other hand, size of Ise Udon is twice so we can be satisfied with little amount of Udon. And also there is no koshi or not chewy. Another different point is tastes. A soup stock is composed of soy sauce, dried bonito, sea tangle and “Iriko”. “Iriko” is kind of laver. It is especially popular in Mie. Like this, ingredients of the soup are almost black, so Ise Udon looks black. However taste is contrary to the looks because they are sweet. Ingredients of Ise Udon are very simple. Only a long green onion is used as topping.
Hoi An in Vietnam, there is traditional noodle so called “Karaou”. It is said that the noodle’s routes is from Ise in Mie. One merchant from Mie came to Vietnam and conveyed a Ise Udon in 17th century. In fact, Ise Udon may popular all of world in different ways and shapes.
I like Ise Udon very much. My mother sometimes cooks at lunch. Many mothers in Mie have own recipe and it has inherited from generation to generation. Of course, people can delicious Ise Udon in Ise. If you go to Ise shrine, I recommend that you go to “Okage Yokocho”, a shopping and food district. You can eat good and traditional Ise Udon there.

Traditional food in my hometown

I would like to talk about Misokatsu, a specialty food of my hometown, Nagoya city, in Aichi prefecture. “Miso” means a substance made from beans, used in Japanese cooking. “Katsu” means a thick slice of meat, especially lamb or pork, which is cooked and served with the bone still attached.”Misokatsu” is “tonkatsu” (Deep fried pork cutlet) with Miso-sauce. This sauce is well known sauce from Nagoya region in Japan. It is a one of the most popular dishes in Nagoya. I wish you could enjoy eating “Misokatsu” more with my article.

First, I will explain about “Misokatsu” recipe. Cut the edge of pork chops in several places. Sprinkle salt and pepper on the pork. Put flour lightly on the pork. Dip the pork in beaten egg. Put bread crumbs on the pork and pat them well. Fry the pork in 320F oil for a few min. Turn over the pork chops and fry a few more min. Take out the pork and put them on a paper towel to drain the oil. Cut each “tonkatsu” into small pieces. Serve shredded cabbage. Put miso sauce on a “tonkatu”. “Tonkatsu” becomes “Misokatsu”.

Second, I want to introduce a famous restaurant in Nagoya. Do you know “Yabaton”? It is a very famous restaurant in Nagoya. If you go to there, you can eat genuine “misokatus”.This is the way they make in Nagoya. You can put miso sauce over the tonkatsu, where everywhere else just uses regular “tonkatsu sauce”.

Finally, I am very proud of having “MIsokatsu” in my hometown. Its reasonable in price and makes “Misokatsu” more familiar. I wish “Misokatsu” would become more popular and more and more people learn about Nagoya.

Hitsumabushi

In this article, I want to write about Hitsumabushi a specialty food of my hometown, Nagoya in Aichi prefecture. Hitsumabushi is a Nagoya dish of strips of boiled eels on rice, and it is one of the typical specialties of Nagoya's local foods called 'Nagoya-meshi'. Nagoya-meshi is Nagoya cuisine, though this was taken not in Nagoya but in Gifu prefecture. I wish you could enjoy eating Hitsumabushi more with my article.

There are several different eel meals and Hitsumabushi is one of them. Hitsumabushi is eel fillets cooked with soy flavoured special source on the charcoal, cut in small pieces and serve on the rice. HITSU is a kind of utensil, in this case meaning a container or a big bowl keeping rice. MABUSHI is noun form of "mabusu." The literal meaning of mabusu is to dust, but in this case, it is to put small pieces of barbecued eel on rice. Though eel may be instantly associated with Hamana-ko Lake, Shizuoka Prefecture, its top production area is actually Aichi Prefecture. Eel is slit open along the belly and grilled whole without steaming - that's the Nagoya style of cooking eel.

First, I will talk about Hitsumabushi’s history. Originally, it was founded in the Meiji era in Nagoya. It was designed to serve for group of people. When the meal was served from a big wooden tub to the large number of the people, it was hard to serve the equal amount of eels to people, therefore the waitress decided to cut the eel fillets into small pieces. At first, the restaurant owner was reluctant to cut high-quality eel fillets into small pieces, however to serve the eel pieces equally to the group of people, it was necessary.

Second, I will tell you how to eat Hitsumabushi. There're 3 ways to enjoy eating hitsumabushi, and the eating procedure is also unique. To begin with, the whole eel dish is divided into four portions. You put the first portion into your bowl and enjoy as it is; then you put the second helping in and put on some condiments (wasabi horseradish, nori dried laver, mitsuba trefoil, etc.) to your taste. The basic spice combination is chopped green onions, grated wasabi (horseradish), and nori (sliced dried laver) seaweed sheet cut into pieces, which go well with grilled eel. Enjoy the changes in tastes. Then you have the third portion in the same manner as the second portion plus green tea or broth poured over it, like o-chazuke soup with rice. And, finally, you can enjoy the remaining portion repeating one of the three methods you liked best!

If you come to Nagoya in Aichi prefecture, I really want you to try Hitsumabushi! I’ m sure you will enjoy it☆

Takoyaki :-)

I want to introduce Japanese famous food “takoyaki”.Tako means octopus in Japanese, and takoyaki are known as octopus balls. Takoyaki is the small and like okonomiyaki. It’s basically a flavored batter with a tiny piece of octopus (tako) inside, and is a quintessential street food snack.
Yaki is derived from "yaku" which simply means "to fry or grill" in Japanese, and can be found in the names of other Japanese cuisine items such as teriyaki or sukiyaki. Takoyaki is the most famous food in Osaka. Also, there are a lot of shops all over Japan. I think most of Japanese have ever ate takoyaki. It is easy to eat so in Japanese festival, a lot of street vendor’s stalls sell takoyaki. I want you to eat takoyaki so I introduce about it.

Making takoyaki at home is something of a recent trend in Japan. Some Japanese held takoyaki party at their home and enjoy eating and making takoyaki. All generations enjoy making takoyaki. It may difficult at first time, but it is very enjoyable. If you want to make takoyaki at home, you should use takoyaki pan. It is sold in many stores.
*Recipe of takoyaki J
Mix flour, dashi soup, and eggs in a bowl to make batter. Thickness of the batter should be like potage soup. Preheat a takoyaki pan and grease the molds. Pour batter into the molds to the full. Put octopus, red ginger, green onion, and dried red shrimp in each mold. Grill takoyaki balls, flipping with a pick to make balls. When browned, remove takoyaki from the pan and place on a plate. Put sauce and mayonnaise on top and sprinkle bonito flakes and aonori over.

I introduced about takoyaki because I like it. Also, I think you will enjoy making and eating takoyaki with your friend, family and so on. Also, I think Osaka is good place to visit. There are a lot of delicious Japanese foods in Osaka.

Traditional food

In this article, I want to write about Oyaki, a famous food of my hometown, in Nagano prefecture. Oyaki are a local specialty that has been eaten in Nagano prefecture since long ago.  They are made by kneading flour -based dough, filling it with ingredients, and then steaming and baking the resulting dumpling according to the chef's preference.  There are a wide variety of variations, and common ingredients include eggplant, mushrooms, red bean past, stir-fried mountain vegetables, dried daikon radish, and spicy vegetables.
Nagano Prefecture's steep mountains and cold climate made rice cultivation difficult and produced poor yields in pre-industrial Japan. Farmers in Nagano turned to buckwheat. The resulting flour was then mixed with water and stuffed with local wild vegetables and seasoned with soy sauce and salt.
We can buy in Nagano everywhere from supermarkets to oyaki specialty shops. It is reasonable. Also, we will able to make it at home.
My grandmother often makes it when I am back my hometown. I help her, but I can not remember how to make it completely. I want to make it for her in future.

Long Boat-Racing

One of the Thai traditions that should be kept alive is ‘Long Boat-Racing’. This tradition signifies the importance of the river to Thai villagers for a long time.

In a ‘Kathin’ meriting-sharing ceremony, Buddhists offer new robe cloth to the monks at the end of the Rains Retreat during October. Traditionally, the local people living along side the river row long boats to carry Buddha images with a kathin in water-borne processions to the local temple. After the kathin ceremony has completed, there is a race of long boats. This is a joyful cultural and religious occasion which brings the local people from different villages together.

‘Khanom Hwan’ or Thai Desserts

‘Khanom Hwan’ or Thai desserts are a Thai tradition that should be kept alive. As hundreds of Thai desserts are popular for their distinct flavours, sweet fragrances, amazing design and authentic colors, the art of ‘Khanom Hwan Thai’ has been passed down from generations to generations.

Most Thai desserts, carrying their names with ‘Thong’(meaning gold) e.g. Thong-yip, Thong-Yod, Foy-thong, represent success, auspices and prosperity. More importantly, their fresh ingredients are made from herbs such as green from cassava roots, violet-blue from blue flowers ‘Dok An-chan’. The colorful appearance makes the desserts delicate, delightful and sophisticated. Accordingly, these desserts are used on special festive occasions such as Buddhist merit-making ceremony, wedding party, new home celebration.

It is not surprising that ‘Khanom Hwan Thai’ requiring time and special skills for preparation has firmly kept its uniqueness among international cuisines.

Macdonald Potate

Macdonald Potato ; all sizes are 150 yen !!!

I watched Macdonald’s CM in 2010. I could feel Japanese culture by watching the CM in Youtube.
Grand father are eating potato with his grandchildren in Macdonald. They are smiling happily each other. We can see that potato is very good. What more, Potato and hamburger are eaten by all generations in Japan now.
He didn’t say ‘It’s so cheap! ’. The cost was showed only by letter.

My favorite TV commercial

I recommend about my favorite advertisement “Mushuda”. Mushuda is the ad about repellent without smell. Especially, I like the third ad. The first, the ad is funny. Until now, Mushuda sells non smell repellent but this time, they sell repellent with scent. Of course, both items sell now. So, in this ad, they are announcing new product. Second, the ad is unique. Most of president in company do not appear in the ad but in this ad, the president is advertizing himself. The third, the ad is attractive. This ad is composed with joke so this ad is very interesting. Thus, this ad includes interesting elements. I think this ad try to capture our notice.

Meiji yasuda seimei

I really like this commercial. This commercial tells you the importance of your parents, brothers and sisters, your family. All commercials of “Meiji Yasuda Seimei” use only photo and song. The great song is all Oda Kazumasa’s song. His singing voice is very special and it mach with the photos. Photos take smiling people. They looks really happy. This photos are taken by usually people and the company invite. Once you see this commercial, you must have strong good emotion. This is very simple commercial but I think all Japanese have been cry once! If you want to forget the busy daily life, this is good way to watch these heartwarming commercials. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5OHx91FDixQ

My favorite commercial

My favorite commercial is Docomo’s commercial.Docomo is famous telephone company. It is cellophane’s advertisement. It is funny because cellophane is personified. This ad attracts a lot of audience. Two famous women appear in this ad. A woman said “I am not Kaera Kimura”. She doesn’t person. She is a cell phone. She always watches her owner. She and her owner are good friends. Her owner talks to her everything. She sings a song. This song is easy to remember so, it became popular song. This ad show us that cell phone needed by us.

My favorite Japanese commercial

Recently, FOG BAR which is hair wax is very popular for especially young people, so the advertising is impressive. First, the ad is fun. A new language is used in the ad. It is a language that uses only “Shu”. “Shu” is a sound which used this hair wax. Until now, there are many sticky hair waxes that use your hand. However, this is not sticky and does not dirty. This ad expresses it as a language. Also, music matches the ad. Second, popular actors and actress appear. They are very cool and cute, so very popular in Japan. An image of the ad is very good because cool and cute people use this hair wax. Finally, the ad has many series. There are long version and short version, so you will be interested in the ad. The ad is very impressive and you will want to use it.

My favorite TV commercial

My favorite TV commercial is a hair styling spray, “uno FOG BAR”. The casts are famous and popular in Japan. In the commercial, they speak unique language, “shu”. It’s so funny. “Shu” is the Japanese sound that we use this spray. They communicate with each other using “shu”, so they don’t speak Japanese, but there are Japanese subtitles in the bottom.
First, a woman goes to a barber for hair styling, and there are four men there. They are talking. And then, they are surprised because two barbers who do styling to them are twins. The twins are strong character so it’ funny. Especially, the contents of all conversation is not related to this product, but I think its interest attract people who watch this TV commercial.

My favorite TV commercial

TV commercial is important to tell many people a product and attract them. In the world, there are a lot of commercials which make us fun. My favorite TV commercial is D-room’s. D-room is a company of rental apartments. First, the ad is funny. In this ad, two girls are taking in the room, and one girl said “What is D-room?” The other girl is surprised that her friend doesn’t know D-room. Suddenly, her voice becomes an old man’s voice, and then she talk about D-room enthusiastically. It is very surprising, interesting! Second, in the ad, Japanese favorite actress, Jyuri Ueno appears. We are attracted by it, and watch it to the end. Moreover, we can remember the name of the company. Finally, we can know this commercial’s message is everyone should know D-room.

TV commercaial for AEON

I recently saw a very effective advertisement for AEON on television. There are good points in this ad. First, the ad is surprising. We can see 24 new variation color of schoolchild’s satchel. I think it is very nice, because many students can choose each of satchels. When I was an elementary school student, there were only 2 colors, red or black. Second, the ad is so pretty! Girls always care a lot their personal appearance, so their costume and satchel are very important for girls, for example pink color of satchel is suitable for white color shirt. They can come dressed up to school. Finally, the ad is cheap. The satchel is made original AEON. It sells at popular prices. I think their parents are very happy!

TV commercial for SHISEIDO.

I found interesting commercial.
First, one character is written looks like ball. A man dribbles and tries to shot. To my surprised, he is a Kaede Rukawa. This commercial’s main characters are SLAMDUNK.
It is very famous comic and there are a lot of funs. Rukawa tries to shot. However, goal changes drum then SHISEIDO’s goods appear. Next, Hanamichi Sakuragi catches the ball and passes the ball to Ryota Miyagi. (Usually, his number is 7. However, he wears 4 number’s uniform). Sakuragi tries to shot, but goal changes bucket then SHISEIDO’s goods appear again. Finally, Mithui cleans the floor with mop then SHISEIDO’s goods appear again. In conclusion, I think that this commercial doesn’t use voice, only sound.
Also, this commercial precious reflection for SULAMDUNK funs.

TV commercial for Oishi Snack

I found a very interesting and effective advertisement for Oishi Snack, and tell you about it. First, the ad is funny. You see a group playing card game merrily, and one of them imitates a bear. But, suddenly, real bears appear, and they try to attack people. People scare them, and give Oishi Snack for bears. Second, the ad is surprising. When the bears eat an Oishi Snack, they dance cheerfully with funny music. This music reminds you this ad. Finally the ad is mysterious. The scene changes, so you can not guess what happen. However you can know it at the end of the ad, and find the products being advertised. In conclusion, the ad is effective because you keep watching it until the last, and give you an impression.

Then, he tries to drink vitamin water. After that, his existence revises. This ad tells us that vitamin water is important for our life.

My favorite advertisement

My favorite advertisement is TSUBAKI, which is one of the best sellers of Shiseido’s products, shampoo. This advertisement’s concept is ‘’Japanese women are beautiful.’’ Japanese women have beautiful hair. This shows us a lot of sophisticated Japanese women who have lustrous hair which fascinates every viewer. So far, Japanese women with long, beautiful hair have been regarded as modest and graceful. Boys like such a women and Girls yearn for those women. I think people watched this advertisement will feel jealousy or think that want to be like that. Also, many types of women appear on this ad. That is why all women can reflect them into themselves if they are in every situation. People are encouraged to have such a beautiful hair. As a result of this, this ad arouses people’s interest and makes them want to buy it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8HOAETMXGnc

I recently saw a very effective advertisement for Soft Bank on television. This commercial advertises cellular phone of Soft Bank. First, the ad is so funny. This commercial appears a family. It is called “Shiroto ke”. Main character is father, the father is dog, but I don’t know why to change the dog. This dog is very cute and interesting. One day, Shirotoke go on a trip to Hakone. When they relax their hotel, suddenly the grandmother told the family that I remarriage a young boy. The father’s dog is very surprise. The dog’s face is very cute and funny. After this story, the dog disagrees with her remarriage, but other family agrees with her remarriage. Suddenly the new young grandfather opens the door of a bedroom. The dog’s face is very surprised and sad. It’s very cute and funny. In conclusion, the ad is effective because you keep watching it and you remember it later.

TV commercial for Nissan NOTE

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rkMXkr1iKig

I recently saw a very effective advertisement for Nissan NOTE on television. First, the ad is so funny. There are a lot of funny characters, and they are dancing enjoyably. These characters are parody of Heidi, Girl of the Alps which is a famous animation known in Japan. Second, the ad is attractive. They say same things “Teinenpi” many times, so people who saw this commercial remember this word naturally. “Teinenpi” is a Japanese word, and it means low fuel consumption. Finally the ad is mysterious. During the most of the ad, you don’t know what product is being advertised. However, at the end of the ad, you can understand this is a car advertisement, Nissan NOTE.

Fit's

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ipTUblPXzE4&NR=1

The commercial advertises Fit’s which is a gum. This gum is very soft so they dance like this CM to express what the gum is so soft. This commercial used Japanese famous a model and an actor. some Japanese place of sightseeing appear in this CM. The commercial’s music is peculiar. I think this CM impresses everyone as a big interest becouse their dance is very unique.

Advertising All over the World

Companies are eager to sell their products all over the world, so they advertise them internationally. But it is difficult to create global advertising without taking cultural and language differences into consideration.  For example, the Japanese drink, "Calpis" is sold in the US as "Calpico" because "Calpis" sounds like "cow piss".

Read about some other examples in "Advertising Slogans Gone Wrong …" http://english-zone.com/language/ads.html and post a comment about this topic.

In writing new ads, global advertisers need to pay attention to cultural differences.  In some countries such as US. UK, and Germany, ads describe the product and explain why it is better than the others.  But in other countries such as Japan, ads create a positive feeling about the product.  As a result, celebrities often appear in Japanese advertisements.

The topic for your second essay is a TV commercial you love most.  First choose your favorite TV commercial from YouTube  http://www.youtube.com/ and link it to our blog.  Then describe the commercial, what message the producer is trying to convey to the audience, what feature impresses you most and if it shows your cultural features.
